Personal Experiences
Chronic headaches
A lot of chronic maladies have spiritual origins. For several months
I had dealt with chronic headaches of varying intensity, sometimes mild
but annoying, but often borderline to full-on migraines. I was seeing a
massage therapist and a chiropractor regularly, and while they offered temporary
relief, it never lasted.
Then at one point when the pain was at the lower end of the scale, I
took a journey to my spirit helpers to ask the cause of this ongoing headache.
Lo and behold, they had been using it to try to get my attention. It seems
I had been sadly remiss in my spiritual work, and it was time for me to
jump back into it with both feet. But since I had -due to various reasons-
fallen out of the habit of listening to my spirits regularly, they took the
opportunity to bash me across the head with a 2 X 4; less metaphorically
than usual. So I started up my spiritual and shamanic work again on a daily
basis, and the pain eased up almost immediately. I still had tension headaches,
but no longer did I have the debilitating pain and queasy stomach of the migraines.
The purpose in sharing this story is my own experience of the usefulness
of blending Western medical treatment with spiritual treatment. While the
origin of my headaches was spiritual, and they eased up a great deal once
I recommitted to my spiritual path, the disharmony had been manifesting
in my body to the point that I also needed to seek medical help.
While a disease or disharmony in the body may have a spiri
tual origin,
I do not suggest that one forgo medical treatment. Often both spiritual
and medical treatment are needed. Shamanism works well with and will not
interfere with medical treatment, and there are times when medical treatment
is invaluable. On the other hand, there are countless people who have dealt
with physical maladies for years, and spiritual work is all they need to
heal. Stay open to all options, and seek the treatment or combination of
treatments that is the most beneficial to you.
